Color was important to add meaning to a design. Most Native Americans named four points of the earth, the four directions of the compass--north, south, east, and west--and assigned a color to each one. Among the Cherokee, north was blue, south was white, east was red, and west was black. Colors could also mean life or death, war or peace, female or male, night or day. For example, the Navaho thought black represented men and blue, women. The Hopi thought that the color blue was the most sacred and used it to honor their gods. Here are some of the other meanings attached to colors:

According to the analysis of all the season and its color family of Marc by Marc Jacobs, the brand is mainly based on the color theory used of Achromatic Color, Primary Color, Analogous Color in Red + Violet + Blue and Split complimentary Color in Red + Violet + Blue + Yellow, Balance of Color and Harmony of Color for further develop their collection.

Also, some interesting elements have been used in Marc by Marc Jacobs’ collection. They are – the color family could be repeat per 4 to 5 seasons, in the new cycle season, the color family used will similar to the pervious one. It may in the similar used of the color schemes such as the analogous color or complementary color. Or in the similar used of dimensions of color such as in the similar hue or value. The second interesting element is the continuation of the color use into the coming season. it is easily to observed that some color used of each season which can be found in the pervious season. There is only slightly difference between the two seasons like the color in the same hue with different level of fullness or in different chroma. And the other interesting element have been used is the accent color. Marc by Marc Jacobs keeps using the accent color which also follows the main principle of the brand used. Such as Achromatic Color, Primary Color, Analogous Color in Red + Violet + Blue and Split Complimentary Color in Red + Violet + Blue + Yellow.

Forecasting the Marc by Marc Jacobs style and the colors for a fall winter collection, I used the knitwear as the main fabric of this collection, those are in simple silhouette. The interest of this collection is used the harmony of color in order to fulfill the style of Marc by Marc Jacobs.

In the individual development, I keep the main element of the color used of Marc by Marc Jacobs and extend to my fall winter collection for the coming season. There are total eight color that I had choose for the collection and they are: White, Garnet, Ochre, Forest Green, Royal blue, Purple, Gray and Sepia. The color family that I used including the balance of aggressive colors, receding color and achromatic colors. And I used the tertiary color with a high chroma, medium value and in saturation constant (same intensity, different hues). The lighter versions of the color family are tones (adding gray to a pure hue).

The colors matching of my collection are mainly complementary color scheme, adjacent complementary color scheme, Analogic and Complimentary Color Scheme and triad color scheme. The principle that I used is Principle of order, which based on and orderly plan (contrasting color scheme and analogous color scheme, also advocates using equal differences. I also used the harmony color for arranging colors of my color family which bring the feeling of Marc by Marc Jacobs (enough variety for interest but avoiding boredom or conflict)

When applied the color to my collection, the principles that I used are based on: contrast of color which advancing and receding hues counter each other; emphasis of color which advancing qualities of value and intensity highlight a location against receding qualities; proportion of color which mostly focus on the hem part of the dress or skirt; and harmony of color which giving enough variety for interest of the feeling like Marc by Marc Jacobs.

For the first design (left hand side) on my collection, I used the receding color as my main color, and the focus of this design is the upper part, therefore, I used the dark green to make the contrast feeling with the bottom part which carried the royal blue and grey. In order to have a balance of the total look, I use the garnet to the shoes that in the same value of dark green.

For the second design, the focus point is the hem of the dress, so that I used the ochre and grey to achieve this feeling. Also, the receding colors (royal blue and purple) were used in the bottom part of the design, the upper part will be the usage of aggressive colors (garnet). And the nest design is in the same principle but the aggressive colors that I used were in the middle part of the design. The fourth and fifth design of my collection which were focused on the receding colors used, as the jacket of fourth design was a shorter hem jacket, therefore, I the proportion of the bottom part of the dress should be bigger then the fifth design as it is carried with a stiff jacket. The last design of my collection was mainly focus on the aggressive colors used. And used the receding color (purple) to bring out the main focus point of the design.

The color of her clothes are achromatic colrs, primary color and secondary color with high chroma and in midium value. The shirt that she wear are in the achromatic color with a sharp color in pink which bring the contrast feeling. the wind breaker of her is in a high hue which macth with her shirt in a analogous color scheme.

Here is a sales women who wear a vest with a Constant Chroma and high value in blue. And the lighter version of her is Tints. Combined with a low value blue denim. The lighter verion of her denim is shades. the color scheme of her is monochromatic schem with different shades and tints.

This lady has a simple colors of her dress which are white and black. and it show the achromatic scheme obviously.
















This woman was carried two color on her dress only which are pink and black. The pink color is in high chroma and in midium value, the lighter version of pink is in a little bit shades. These two color are in unbalance proportion which make a small contrast feeling.














This lady is dressing with achromatic colors (black and white), yellow with high chroma, grey and brown in low value . The main color scheme of her dressing is in achromatic scheme with a small part of yellow which bring the contrast feeling.

Here is the current fashion in the maritime color of navy blue, we can discover that it used to have a combination of navy blue, white and red. That's interesting for using the contrast color onto the garment which pleasing to our eyes.

The color family that i used included aggressive colors ( red), receding colors(dark green and purple) and achromatic colore (black, white and grey). these colors are in the high high chroma with middle value. and the color scheme is the single split complemtary color (red, dark green and purple) . The color mixing of the collection were mostly the principle of order.
